The Invisible Tax
You find a promising new token on DexScreener. The price is $0.01. You click buy on Raydium. A few seconds later, your transaction confirms, but when you check your wallet, you realize you bought the token at $0.015. You just lost 50% of your purchasing power instantly.
You might think the price just moved naturally, but it did not. You were likely the victim of an MEV bot.
What is MEV?
MEV stands for Maximal Extractable Value. It refers to the maximum profit a miner (or in Solana's case, a validator) can make by reordering, including, or excluding transactions within a block.
On Solana, highly sophisticated MEV bots constantly monitor the network for large, pending transactions (like your buy order). Because blockchains are public, they can see your transaction before it is finalized.
The Sandwich Attack
The most common MEV strategy is the "Sandwich Attack." Here is how a bot steals your money:
- The Target: You submit a buy order with a high slippage tolerance (e.g., 20%).
- The Front-Run: The MEV bot sees your pending order. It pays a higher priority fee to the validator to ensure its own buy order is processed right before yours.
- The Price Impact: The bot's massive buy order drives the price of the token up significantly.
- Your Execution: Your transaction is processed next. Because the bot just drove the price up, you end up buying at the absolute top of your slippage limit.
- The Dump (The Back-Run): Immediately after your buy goes through, the bot sells the tokens it bought in step 2. It pockets the difference as pure, risk-free profit.
How to Protect Yourself
MEV bots prey on amateur traders who do not understand slippage. To protect yourself:
- Tighten Your Slippage: Never use 50% or 100% slippage on public routers. A tighter slippage leaves no room for the bot to sandwich you.
- Use Private RPCs (Jito): Advanced trading bots use Jito bundles, which are private transaction channels that bypass the public mempool entirely. If the MEV bots cannot see your transaction pending, they cannot front-run it.
RugPullShield protects you from malicious developers, but you must protect yourself from the network. Trade smart, understand slippage, and do not let bots extract your hard-earned Solana.
