Honeypot Traps: Why You Can Buy But Can Not Sell

A skyrocketing chart is not always a good sign. If nobody is selling, it might be a honeypot. Learn how scammers trap your funds permanently.

The Ultimate Illusion

You find a new token on DexScreener. The chart is a perfect, uninterrupted green staircase. The market cap is climbing rapidly, and you do not see a single red sell candle. It looks like the ultimate moonshot.

You buy in, feeling like a genius as the price continues to rise. But when you try to take profits, the decentralized exchange gives you an error: "Transaction Failed". You increase your slippage to 20%, then 50%. It still fails. You have just stepped into a Honeypot.

How Honeypots Work

A honeypot is a malicious smart contract designed with a one-way street: users are allowed to buy the token, but they are technically restricted from selling it.

On Solana, this is often executed using a specific feature called Freeze Authority. When a developer deploys a token, they can choose to retain the ability to freeze individual wallets. As soon as a retail investor buys the token, a bot instantly freezes their wallet's balance for that specific asset. The investor can watch the value of their tokens go up on the chart, but they can never swap them back to SOL.

Because nobody is physically able to sell, the chart only shows buy orders. This creates a fake, parabolic green chart that lures in even more unsuspecting victims.

The "Transfer Fee" Trick

Another method is manipulating transfer fees. Some developers code a hidden 100% sell tax into the smart contract. You can initiate the sell transaction, but the contract takes 100% of the tokens as a "fee" and sends them back to the developer, leaving you with nothing.

How to Avoid the Trap

Honeypots are incredibly effective because human greed overrides logic. A chart with zero sell pressure should instantly trigger a red flag, not FOMO.

Before buying any token that looks "too good to be true", use RugPullShield. Our AI engine instantly analyzes the token's smart contract. If we detect that Freeze Authority is still active, or if there are hidden transfer fees embedded in the code, we immediately flag the token as a CRITICAL RISK Honeypot, saving you from a permanent loss.
